Why Protein is so important in your diet and ways to increase your intake.

  • August 15, 2022

As a keen fitness enthusiast I have always been aware of how important protein is in keeping me in shape and in good health, which is why when I created Epic Oats I was keen to make sure each pot had a high level of protein. All 3 flavours have a whopping 14g per serving!

But just why is protein so vital to good health?

Here’s my top 5 reasons:

1. Helps you feel full – A high protein diet reduces hunger pangs and therefore means you are likely to eat less calories. For the scientific ones amongst you this is due to the improved functioning of weigh-regulating hormones.

2. Boosts Metabolism and aids Fat Burning – High protein intake can boost your metabolism significantly helping you burn up more calories. One study showed that a group with a high intake of protein burned up 260 calories more than the control group!

3. Increases Muscle Mass and Strength – Muscle is mainly protein so having a high protein diet can help you maintain your muscle mass and increase muscle strength. So it is really important if you exercise regularly. It can also help prevent losing muscle mass when losing weight.

4. Helps You Recover Faster – If like me you are physically active and have sustained various injuries through the years, you may be pleased to hear that a high protein diet can help you recover from these injuries more quickly. This is because protein forms the main building blocks of both tissues and organs.

5. Helps with the ageing process – Protein is really important to help us stay fit as we age. People with a high protein diet tend to have stronger bones and less chance of fractures and osteoporosis as they get older. Plus it helps reduce the muscle loss associated with ageing.
